Shebna was a powerful man in the court of King Hezekiah in Judah 700 years before Christ. Next to the king, he had the most powerful position in the kingdom. Shebna’s powers went to his head and used his position to exploit the poor and the innocent in order to make
himself exorbitantly rich. God said through Isaiah that Shebna needed to be replaced by a person of integrity. The reason why this passage was selected today for the first reading is link to what we are going to be hearing in the gospel of today about keys of heaven given to Peter. Keys are a symbol of authority. But before we go to the gospel passage the first reading speak to us that in the world of today also people look for power and most often they abused the power given to them and they make themselves rich at the expense of the masses. But for us Christians our life must be an example of integrity and honesty.
 
Coming to today’s gospel, Jesus posed an important question to his apostles by trying to know what people thought of him. He later directed this particular question to the apostles themselves. Peter was the one who answered it correctly and for that reason Jesus told him to be the leader for the rest and to direct the church that he will form. In the scriptures, Peter have been given preeminent positions among the apostles, but there are two places where his position has been clearly stated. The first is the gospel of John where Jesus told Peter to feed his lamb and to feed his sheep. And today we have the second one where Peter was given the keys of the kingdom.Before this, Peter told Jesus he is the true Messiah that has come. The question that Jesus posed to the apostles is also for us today personally and each one of us is to answer it according to our perception of who Jesus is for us in our daily lives. We may all have a different view about Jesus. For some people, Jesus may be the one who protects and guide them. For others, he is the one who has cured them from a sickness or other things in life. The simple question for us today is why am I following Jesus? Let each one of us answer this question from his or her heart.
 
We have started our novena towards the celebration of the feast of the Divine Infant Jesus. I therefore encourage you to continue to participate in devotion until we celebrate the feast.

Sebna era un hombre poderoso en la corte del rey Ezequías en Judá 700 años antes de Cristo. Después del rey, tenía la posición más poderosa del reino. Los poderes de Sebna se le subieron a la cabeza y utilizó su posición para explotar a los pobres y a los inocentes con el fin de hacerse exorbitantemente rico. Dios dijo a través de Isaías que Sebna necesitaba ser reemplazada por una persona íntegra. La razón por la que se seleccionó este pasaje hoy para la primera lectura es un vínculo con lo que vamos a escuchar en el evangelio de hoy sobre las llaves del cielo dadas a Pedro. Las llaves son un símbolo de autoridad. Pero antes de pasar al pasaje del evangelio, la primera lectura nos dice que en el mundo de hoy también la gente busca poder y la mayoría de las veces abusan del poder que se les ha dado y se enriquecen a expensas de las masas. Pero para nosotros los cristianos nuestra vida debe ser un ejemplo de integridad y honestidad.
 
Al llegar al evangelio de hoy, Jesús planteó una pregunta importante a sus apóstoles al tratar de saber qué pensaba la gente de él. Más tarde dirigió esta pregunta particular a los propios apóstoles. Peter fue quien respondió correctamente y por eso razón por la cual Jesús le dijo que fuera el líder de los demás y que dirigiera la iglesia que él formaría. En las Escrituras, a Pedro se le han dado posiciones preeminentes entre los apóstoles, pero hay dos lugares donde su posición se ha declarado claramente. El primero es el evangelio de Juan, donde Jesús le dijo a Pedro que alimentara a su cordero y apacentara a sus ovejas. Y hoy tenemos el segundo donde a Pedro le dieron las llaves del reino. Antes de esto, Pedro le dijo a Jesús que él es el verdadero Mesías que ha venido. La pregunta que Jesús planteó a los apóstoles es también para nosotros hoy personalmente y cada uno de nosotros debe responderla según nuestra percepción de quién es Jesús para nosotros en nuestra vida diaria. Es posible que todos tengamos una visión diferente sobre Jesús. Para algunas personas, Jesús puede ser quien las proteja y guíe. Para otros, él es quien los ha curado de alguna enfermedad u otras cosas de la vida. La pregunta sencilla para nosotros hoy es ¿por qué sigo a Jesús? Que cada uno de nosotros responda a esta pregunta desde su corazón.
 
Hemos iniciado nuestra novena hacia la celebración de la fiesta del Divino Niño Jesús. Por tanto, yo les animo a continuar participando en la devoción hasta que celebremos la fiesta.

The first reading today reveals to us about the prophet Elijah who was trying to flee from persecution because he challenged the gods of the Baals. In this chapter, the prophet thought he was going to hear the voice of God in a more dramatic ways like in thunder, wind and fire, but God revealed himself to him in a gentler way. That is how God actually reveal himself to us especially using the silence in our hearts to speak to us. We have to remain calm in order to listen to the voice of God.

In the second reading for today, Paul had to let the Romans know that the gospel of Jesus that he preaches is the truth and not lies. His own life is a witness to the word of the message that he preaches to the people. The word of God is truth and life for those who believe in him.

We see in today’s Gospel how Jesus demonstrated his power over nature itself. To walk on water is not a usual thing done by a person, but Jesus proved that even nature can obey him and that he has control over it. Usually when Jesus worked a miracle, he was responding to someone’s needs: hunger, sickness, possession from an evil spirit, storms on the sea. Jesus walking on the water is simply a manifestation of his divine nature.

Jesus assured his apostles not to be afraid as he is the one walking on the water. But Peter doubted and started to sink. There also Jesus stretched his hands toward him to rescue him from drowning. Fear of course is a healthy thing as it motivates us to protect ourselves from some threat to our own wellbeing or those we love. Fear stimulates us emotionally to prepare to fight or flight. But a lot of people are consumed by fears that are groundless, irrational, or certain things we can do nothing about except pray. Jesus is inviting us today not to be afraid but to trust in him always that he walks along the way with us and even if things are pressing on us or we are about to sink, he is still there to rescue us from them all. We just have to trust in him.

Very soon we shall be starting our novena for the celebration of the feast of the Divine infant Jesus. I encourage you all to fully participate in all the religious activities and the social activities we are going to be having. It is also a way also to come together and celebrate what we believe in as Catholics.

La primera lectura de hoy nos revela acerca del profeta Elías que intentaba huir de la persecución porque desafiaba a los dioses de los Baales. En este capítulo, el profeta pensó que iba a escuchar la voz de Dios de una manera más dramática como en el trueno, el viento y el fuego, pero Dios le reveló él mismo a él de una manera más suave. Así es como Dios se revela realmente a nosotros, especialmente usando el silencio en nuestros corazones para hablarnos. Tenemos que mantener la calma para escuchar la voz de Dios.

En la segunda lectura de hoy, Pablo tenía que dejarles saber a los romanos que el evangelio de Jesús que predica es la verdad y no mentiras. Su propia vida es un testimonio de la palabra del mensaje que él predica al pueblo. La palabra de Dios es verdad y vida para los que creen en él.

Vemos en el Evangelio de hoy cómo Jesús demostró su poder sobre la naturaleza misma. Caminar sobre el agua no es algo común que haga una persona, pero Jesús demostró que incluso la naturaleza puede obedecerle y que él tiene control sobre ella. Por lo general, cuando Jesús hizo un milagro, estaba respondiendo a las necesidades de alguien: hambre, enfermedad, posesión de un espíritu maligno, tempestades en el mar. Jesús caminando sobre el agua es simplemente una manifestación de su naturaleza divina.

Jesús aseguró a sus apóstoles que no tuvieran miedo ya que él es el que camina sobre el agua. Pero Peter dudó y comenzó a hundirse. Allí también Jesús extendió sus manos hacia él para rescatarlo de ahogarse. El miedo, por supuesto, es algo saludable, ya que nos motiva a protegernos de alguna amenaza a nuestro propio bienestar o el de aquellos a quienes amamos. El miedo nos estimula emocionalmente para prepararnos para luchar o huir. Pero mucha gente está consumida por temores que son infundados, irracionales o ciertas cosas sobre las que no podemos hacer nada excepto orar. Jesús es invitándonos hoy a no tener miedo sino a confiar en él siempre que camina con nosotros en el camino y aunque las cosas nos apresuren o estemos a punto de hundirnos, él sigue ahí para rescatarnos de todas ellas. Solo tenemos que confiar en él.

Muy pronto estaremos iniciando nuestra novena por la celebración de la fiesta del Divino niño Jesús. Animo a todos a que
participar en todas las actividades religiosas y las actividades sociales que vamos a tener. Es también una manera de unirnos y celebrar lo que creemos como católicos.

When King David died, his son Solomon succeeded him as king of Israel. In today’s first reading, we hear the prayer of Solomon as he begins his reign. He prayed for an understanding heart so that he would reign well. Just think about the possible gifts that Solomon could have asked God, but he chose to ask for the gift of wisdom to be able to govern his subjects under him.
 
If we were to be asked to ask for anything from God, what would be our response? Maybe for some of us we would be asking for money or power or health or children or jobs or other things that are necessary for life. Wisdom may not be the first thing that we may think of. But here we are with Solomon giving us a good example as to what to ask from God and any other thing that will be added onto us. When Solomon asked for wisdom, it showed he was already wise. Unfortunately, he did not keep using his wisdom to serve God’s people well. He married too many wives, and the country went into bankruptcy so much so that when he died the country split into two kingdoms isolating the kings who were descendants of David and Solomon. Having wisdom does not mean that we can use it well.
 
Turning to the gospel message of today, it is the third week since we have been hearing about the kingdom of God in parables by Jesus himself. The question we must be asking ourselves is, what we would spend our money on like the people in the gospel? Notice how the one who found the pearl which is precious sold everything that he has to buy it. Likewise other people who after finding a valuable treasure sold all to buy that plot. All this means for us is that we must make heaven our priority in life as it is going to be our final destination and a treasure that we cannot afford to lose at the end. We must do all that is in our power and by the grace of God in order to attain heaven. St Augustine said, “We are created for God and our hearts are restless, until they rest in God.” So, brothers and sisters let us try as much as we can to work towards heaven as Jesus himself promised us that in his father’s house there are many mansions.
 
Once again, I thank you all for your love and care that you have shown me for my 25th anniversary celebration.

Cuando el rey David murió, su hijo Salomón lo sucedió como rey de Israel. En la primera lectura de hoy , escuchamos la oración de Salomón cuando comienza su reinado. Rezó por un corazón comprensivo para poder reinar bien. Piensen en los posibles dones que Salomón pudo haber pedido a Dios, pero decidio por pedir el don de la sabiduría para poder gobernar a sus sujetos bajo él.
 
Si pudiéramos pedir algo a Dios, ¿cuál sería nuestra respuesta? Tal vez para algunos de nosotros estaríamos pidiendo dinero o poder o salud o hijos o trabajos o otras cosas que son necesarias para la vida. La sabiduría no seria lo primero en lo que pensamos. Pero aquí estamos con Salomón dándonos un buen ejemplo de qué pedirle a Dios y cualquier otra cosa que nos será añadida. Cuando Salomón pidió sabiduría, el demostró que ya era sabio. Desafortunadamente, no siguió usando su sabiduría para servir bien al pueblo de Dios. Se casó con demasiadas esposas, y el país entró en bancarrota tanto que cuando él murió, el país se dividió en dos reinos, aislando a los reyes que eran descendientes de David y Salomón. Tener sabiduría no significa que podamos usarla bien.
 
Volviendo al mensaje del evangelio de hoy, es la tercera semana desde que escuchamos sobre el reino de Dios en parábolas del mismo Jesús. La pregunta que debemos hacernos es, ¿en qué gastaríamos nuestro dinero como la gente en el evangelio? Note cómo el que encontró la perla que es preciosa vendió todo lo que tenía para comprarla. Así mismo otras personas que después de encontrar un valioso tesoro vendieron todo para comprar esa parcela. Todo esto significa para nosotros que debemos hacer del cielo nuestra prioridad en la vida, ya que será nuestro destino final y un tesoro que no podemos permitirnos perder al final. Debemos hacer todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance y por la gracia de Dios para alcanzar el cielo. San Agustín dijo: “Somos creados para Dios y nuestro corazón está inquieto, hasta que descanse en Dios”. Entonces, hermanos y hermanas, procuremos en todo lo que podamos trabajar hacia el cielo como Jesús mismo nos prometió que en la casa de su padre hay muchas moradas.
 
Una vez más, les agradezco a todos por su amor y cuidado que me han mostrado para la celebración de mi 25 aniversario.
