All that God has created is good. The first reading says that God loves all his creatures; otherwise he would not have made them. How then can we hate anything or anybody in the world?

The gospel brings before us a man who, according to the thinking of the time was evil and despised. How Jesus saw Zacchaeus teaches us how should see people. Most of the time, we judge people by their appearance but Jesus always see the heart of the person in his presence. So for us in our eyes someone may be bad but in the eyes of God that person might be a good person.

The gospel gives us the image of a God as a Father who sent his son “to seek out the lost ones”. What went on in Thessalonica can happen in our communities. Actually, it is already happening in our world of today. False preachers may try to spread another gospel, a gospel of their own invention, a gospel encouraging fear of God. The words of St Paul in the second reading put us on our guard against them. We must always be prepared to call those who want to distort the gospel that Jesus came to preached in order. We must do this not only by words but also by our actions in the faith. 

I take this chance also to thank you all for the dance that we had on Saturday. It was nice to be with friends and share music, dance, food and drinks. Our greatest thanks go to the Guadalupe group for their organization. I also thank again Raul and family for their work in the ministers and altar server’s room and also to Eduardo for painting the chapel for us. May god bless them all for their generosity to the parish by their talents.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO
 
Todo lo que Dios ha creado es bueno. La primera lectura dice que Dios ama a todas sus criaturas; de lo contrario no los habría hecho. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos odiar algo o alguien en el mundo?

El evangelio nos presenta a un hombre que, según el pensamiento de la época, era malo y despreciado. Cómo Jesús vio a Zaqueo nos enseña cómo deben ver las personas. La mayoría de las veces, juzgamos a las personas por su apariencia, pero Jesús siempre ve el corazón de la persona en su presencia. Entonces, para nosotros, a nuestros ojos, alguien puede ser malo, pero a los ojos de Dios, esa persona puede ser una buena persona.

El evangelio nos da la imagen de un Dios como Padre que envió a su hijo “a buscar a los perdidos”. Lo que sucedió en Tesalónica puede suceder en nuestras comunidades. En realidad, es ya está sucediendo en nuestro mundo de hoy. Los falsos predicadores pueden tratar de difundir otro evangelio, un evangelio de su propia invención, un evangelio que fomenta el temor de Dios. Las palabras de san Pablo en la segunda lectura nos ponen en guardia contra ellos. Siempre debemos estar preparados para llamar a aquellos que quieren distorsionar el evangelio que Jesús vino a predicar en orden. Debemos hacer esto no solo con palabras sino también con nuestras acciones en la fe.

Aprovecho esta oportunidad también para agradecerles a todos por el baile que tuvimos el sábado. Fue agradable estar con amigos y compartir música, baile, comida y bebida. Nuestro mayor agradecimiento al grupo de Guadalupe por su organización. También agradezco nuevamente a Raúl y familia por su trabajo en el salón de ministros y monaguillos y también a Eduardo por pintando la capilla para nosotros. Que dios los bendiga a todos por su generosidad a la parroquia por sus talentos.
 
Que el Señor nos tenga bajo su cuidado hasta el próximo Domino en la fiesta del Señor.

It’s always joyful for me to celebrate with you every Sunday, as we all recognized that God is very important in our lives and given us all the blessings that we need in our daily tasks.

The gospel today will not be easily understood unless we keep in mind what the first reading teaches us about God’s justice. God is just, says Ben Sira, not because he grants each person what the person deserves, but because he saves the poor and listens to the cries of the miserable and the defenseless. The gospel tells us that this is God’s attitude. He is moved by the publican who can present only his misery and his sins.

The second reading too can be seen in this light. Paul is saying that one day he will receive from God the “crown” that the just judge will give to all those who have given their lives for the Gospel. It will be a gift, not a reward due to him. We all must wait for this beautiful promise from God. It is true that only a just God can reward us abundantly here on earth and also in the world to come eternal life with him in heaven.

Now let me share with you a beautiful letter that I received from the Archdiocese of Chicago concerning our annual catholic appeal of 2022 in the parish. It is inserted in the bulletin so please read it for yourselves. But as your pastor, I must say I am very proud of you of your generosity as we have gone being our goal of $10,224. To all those who have contributed, I say may God bless you all and keep you safe. I will find time to invite you all for a dinner. Let us continue with this spirit in our parish and other good things will surely follow. We have also finished repairing the organ and the traditional bells of our church. We thank the anonymous donor who made it possible for us. Also Emilio Hernandez received the Christi Fidelis award from the Archdiocese on his dedication and service in the parish. These are all good news for our parish community.

Do not forget to get your tickets for our upcoming dance that we are going to have on the 29th of this month here in our parish hall.

Siempre es un gozo para mí celebrar con ustedes todos los domingos, ya que todos reconocemos que Dios es muy importante en nuestras vidas y nos ha dado todas las bendiciones que necesitamos en nuestras tareas diarias.

El evangelio de hoy no se entenderá fácilmente a menos que tengamos en cuenta lo que la primera lectura nos enseña sobre la justicia de Dios. Dios es justo, dice Ben Sira, no porque conceda a cada uno lo que merece, sino porque salva a los pobres y escucha los gritos de los miserables y los indefensos. El evangelio nos dice que esta es la actitud de Dios. Le conmueve el publicano que sólo puede presentar su miseria y sus pecados.

La segunda lectura también puede verse bajo esta luz. Pablo está diciendo que un día él recibe de Dios la “corona” que el justo juez dará a todos los que han dado su vida por el Evangelio. Será un regalo, no una recompensa debida a él. Todos debemos esperar esta hermosa promesa de Dios. Es cierto que solo un Dios justo puede recompensarnos abundantemente aquí en la tierra y también en el mundo venidero vida eterna con él en el cielo.

Ahora permítanme compartir con ustedes una hermosa carta que recibí de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago sobre nuestra apelación católica anual de 2022 en la parroquia. Se inserta en el boletín, así que por favor léanlo ustedes mismos. Pero como su pastor, debo decir que estoy muy orgulloso de usted por su generosidad ya que hemos llegado a nuestra meta de $10,224. A todos aquellos que han contribuido, les digo que Dios los bendiga a todos y los mantenga a salvo. Encontraré tiempo para invitarlos a todos a cenar. Sigamos con este espíritu en nuestra parroquia y seguramente seguirán otras cosas buenas. También hemos terminado de reparar el órgano y las tradicionales campanas de nuestra iglesia. Agradecemos al donante anónimo que lo hizo posible para nosotros. También Emilio Hernández recibió el premio Christi Fidelis de la Arquidiócesis por su dedicación y servicio en la parroquia. Todas estas son buenas noticias para nuestra comunidad parroquial.

The intense heat is behind us and the climate is getting cooler every day. Very soon we shall experience winter again. Today we celebrate the 29th Sunday in ordinary time.
 
The first reading and the gospel show us two examples of people who pray, one without tiring and the other with determination. Both achieve their goals, salvation for the people of Israel (Moses) and justice (the widow). Only if we pray like them will we be always ready to accept the kingdom of God.
 
The Lord generally delays, because his time is not ours, his ways are not our ways, his thoughts are not our thoughts. If we pray we will not lose hope and when the Lord comes to do justice, we will be found vigilant.
 
In the second reading we hear Paul’s counsel to Timothy, “Study the Holy Scriptures!”
Constant contact with the word of God is the best prayer that we can have. To know the scriptures is to know God. St Jerome the biblical scholar put it well when he said, “ignorance about the word of God is ignorance about God himself. We must in our lives pray with the scriptures.

El intenso calor ha quedado atrás y el clima se vuelve más fresco cada día. Muy pronto volveremos a experimentar el invierno. Hoy celebramos el vigésimo noveno domingo del tiempo ordinario.
 
La primera lectura y el evangelio nos muestran dos ejemplos de personas que rezan, unos sin cansarse y el otros con determinación. Ambos logran sus objetivos, la salvación del pueblo de Israel (Moisés) y la justicia (la viuda). Sólo si oramos como ellos estaremos siempre dispuestos a acoger el reino de Dios.
 
El Señor generalmente se demora, porque su tiempo no es el nuestro, sus caminos no son nuestros caminos, sus pensamientos no son nuestros pensamientos. Si oramos no perderemos la esperanza y cuando el Señor venga a hacer justicia, seremos hallados vigilantes.
 
En la segunda lectura escuchamos el consejo de Pablo a Timoteo: “¡Estudia las Sagradas Escrituras!” El contacto constante con la palabra de Dios es la mejor oración que podemos tener. Conocer las escrituras es conocer a Dios. San Jerónimo, el erudito bíblico, lo expresó bien cuando dijo: “la ignorancia acerca de la palabra de Dios es ignorancia acerca de Dios mismo. Debemos en nuestras vidas orar con las escrituras.

When we consider the readings of today critically, they are telling us that we must have faith.
 
The first reading of today, we see how God through the prophet Habakkuk, urges the people of Israel not to give up because of difficulties or situations that seem to shake their faith in God. To really understand the background of the first reading, we must go back to historical facts about the prophet Habakkuk. He lived about six hundred years before Christ, under the rule of king

​Jehoiakim. The king did nothing to protect the weak and the poor and allowed them to be oppressed. For this reason the people went to the prophet to consult the Lord on their behalf. Habakkuk confronted God and asks Him to act on the part of those who are suffering. We too sometimes wonder why God allows so much injustice in the world and why he allows such awful catastrophic events to happen.
 
In the gospel Jesus is telling us that faith is a very powerful force, capable of unhoped-for results. Faith is not something that gives us a right to reward. It is a gift that helps us to understand life and brings us happiness and we must thank God for it.
 
At times we forgot the gifts we have received and it is necessary to fan the flame and once again
become aware of our privileged situation and of the responsibility that entails. This is what Paul is recommending to us in the second reading. May we always try to keep up with our faith in God no matter what happens.
 
On another note we have program activities in our parish for fund raising activities. I personally
encourage you all to take part in them to help our parish to be on a sound foot economically.

Cuando consideramos críticamente las lecturas de hoy, nos dicen que debemos tener fe.
 
La primera lectura de hoy, vemos como Dios a través del profeta Habacuc, exhorta al pueblo de Israel a no desistir por las dificultades o situaciones que parecen quebrantar su fe en Dios. Para comprender realmente el trasfondo de la primera lectura, debemos volver a los hechos históricos sobre el profeta Habacuc. Vivió unos seiscientos años antes de Cristo, bajo el gobierno del rey Joacim. El rey no hizo nada para proteger a los débiles y los pobres y permitió que fueran oprimidos. Por eso el pueblo acudió al profeta para consultar al Señor en su nombre. Habacuc se enfrenta a Dios y le pide que actúe en favor de los que sufren. Nosotros también nos preguntamos a veces por qué Dios permite tanta injusticia en el mundo y por qué permite que sucedan eventos catastróficos tan terribles.
 
En el evangelio Jesús nos está diciendo que la fe es una fuerza muy poderosa, capaz de resultados inesperados. La fe no es algo que nos da derecho a una recompensa. Es un don que nos ayuda a comprender la vida y nos aporta felicidad y debemos agradecer a Dios por ello.
 
A veces nos olvidamos de los dones que hemos recibido y es necesario avivar la llama y volver a tomar conciencia de nuestra situación privilegiada y de la responsabilidad que ello conlleva. Esto es lo que Pablo nos está recomendando en la segunda lectura. Que siempre tratemos de mantener nuestra fe en Dios sin importar lo que suceda.
 
En otra nota, tenemos actividades de programa en nuestra parroquia para actividades de recaudación de fondos. Personalmente, los animo a todos a participar en ellos para ayudar a nuestra parroquia a tener un buen pie económico.
